What Is A Paralegal?

Ontario was the first jurisdiction in North America to institute mandatory licensing for persons who propose to provide legal services to the public but who are not lawyers. All paralegals are now licensed and supervised by the Law Society of Upper Canada, the same regulatory body that licenses and oversees all lawyers.

Paralegals are permitted to represent members of the public before numerous boards and tribunals in Ontario, but are restricted from practice in Superior Court, in matters of family law or real estate, or in any criminal matters where a person’s liberty may be at risk in law.

Some boards and tribunals in which paralegals are permitted to practice:

        • Small Claims Court

        • Provincial Offences Court

        • Landlord and Tenant Board

        • Criminal Pardons and American Waivers

        • Workers Safety and Insurance Board

        • Claims and Appeals for Disability Benefits

        • Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal

        • Mortgage and Solicitors’ Act Assessments
